About it

What it does

Works out your route, finds every gas station along it and lists them by price for the fuel you pick. Tell it how many miles you can drive and it shows which stations you can reach and the last one before you run out. Or search around your location or any place.

Where prices come from

Google doesn't collect gas prices itself. It licenses them from OPIS (Oil Price Information Service), which tracks prices at well over 100,000 US stations. OPIS gets them through credit card companies, from stations that send in their prices every day, and from surveys. That's why Google's help pages tell you to report a wrong price to OPIS, not to Google.

Disclaimer

Prices are a guide, not a guarantee. About 25,000 stations report close to real time from card swipes; the rest send prices once a day, so independent and rural stations can be 1 to 5 days behind. Regular updates fastest; premium, midgrade, diesel and E85 are more often out of date. Warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club often show no price. A price change during the day won’t show until the next update, so check the sign before you fill up. Sources: Blumenthals, Yahoo Tech, Gadget Hacks.
